Salesforce Military Spouse - My husband was already in the military when we met, so the military quickly became my new way of life.

Some of the benefits we get as an active duty family are strong communication skills, even stronger organizational skills, and the ability to accept the things we cannot change. Being a military spouse comes with many challenges. Learning to handle high stress levels, see the positive in every situation, and support each other through all the crazy ups and downs that come with being an active duty military family hasn't always been easy.

What challenges have you faced in your career as a result of your role in a military family?

The added stress of having an assigned husband while still working every day and maintaining a household on my own was a definite strain on my career at the time. We were always worried about the prospect of being rehired because I was only licensed to do my old job at Southwest. The fear that we would have to move from that area was always a fear because I would not have a job.

I grew up in Killeen, Texas. I am the youngest of two daughters. I grew up in a very loving and supportive traditional southern family. My parents always taught my sister and myself that we can do anything we want as long as we are willing to put in the work. Both of my parents worked hard for the careers they had and were a huge inspiration to me.

The biggest challenge for me coming to Merivis was coming from a profession with no technical experience or background. I wasn't sure if I would be able to get certified. My lack of confidence in my technical skills was a huge challenge that I had to overcome to be successful in my Salesforce journey.

I met Merivis through my former patient, Orlando, who is a volunteer at the foundation. He knew that my husband was a veteran and that I was thinking about changing careers and considering the technology world. After discussing the foundation with him, I decided to do some research myself and quickly realized that Merivis was a great opportunity for veterans and military personnel to get a Salesforce education that would give me a chance to enter the world of enter the technology without leaving. go back to college. The strong community and support system that comes with being part of Merivis was one of the reasons that I decided to apply.

My #MerivisMoment happened last summer when I was in my second cohort. It was the first time that I began to realize how much I learned during my first cohort and how privileged it was to be part of such a great community. I started to feel confident in my Salesforce knowledge for the first time, and shortly after that cohort, thanks to the support and encouragement I received from my peers during that class, I eventually landed my first Salesforce admin job.

My current goal is to become a Salesforce developer. However, one of the many things I've fallen in love with when it comes to Salesforce and the Merivis community is that the possibilities are almost endless. There is such a great community and support system to help you achieve any goal, and I look forward to using this resource to my advantage to further my career, wherever that path leads.

Adaptation. Being in the military teaches you to deal with a variety of situations that most civilians never have to face. It is an ever-changing environment and you are never sure what it will ask of you. The ability to adapt to any scenario you are presented with is a valuable skill set that can easily transfer to work in any organization.

If you had one piece of advice for new students going through the Merivis program, what would it be?

Take advantage of the available resources. The amount of knowledge you gain is incredible. Everyone in the Merivis community is willing to talk to you and share this knowledge. All you have to do is ask.

Merivis allowed me to change careers from being a dental hygienist to working full-time as a Salesforce admin for a company in less than six months. I would never have been able to make this change without Merivis supporting me. I was afraid to leave the only profession I knew to pursue a career in technology when I had no experience or background to help me through this transition. They gave me the confidence to believe I could do it and provided me with a support system when the going got tough and encouraged me to keep going. And when I finally passed the exam, got the certificate and then got my first job, it wasn't just me who celebrated - it was everyone from the community who helped me celebrate with me. For the first time in a long time I am excited about my career again. This is absolutely unexpected for me. I will always be grateful to Merivis and the Merivis community for lifting me up and helping me believe in myself.

He holds a bachelor's degree in economics with a minor in international studies from San Diego State University. Travis graduated from the University of South Florida with a master's degree in global sustainability and sustainable energy. He studied abroad in China for a semester and interned at the US State Department.

After moving to Texas for his wife's Air Force career, Travis moved his career from sustainable energy to the technology industry.

In 2019, he was selected for the first Microsoft Military Spouse Technology Academy cohort in San Antonio. The Microsoft Academy is a 22-week training program that prepares military spouses for careers in technology, specifically in cloud software development. San Antonio is the second location for the Microsoft Military Souse Technology Academy. The academy began as a pilot program in Tacoma, Washington.

Travis completed the program in March 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic began to affect the US economy. After completing this program, he did not receive a job offer.

Connecting The Military Community With A Career In Tech

A mentor suggested he become a Salesforce administrator. According to Salesforce research, there were nearly 50,000 jobs for Salesforce administrators in 2018, with an average salary of $91,000.
